Mission Statement

The mission of SDO's Apprentice Artist and University Partnership Programs is to provide in-depth training for exceptional singers, both young professionals and those at the collegiate level. Participating artists will receive musical and dramatic coaching and scene and role preparation, and perform in SDO's community engagement concert series, Opera Exposed!. The Young artist Training Program consists of two programs:
Apprentice Artist Program and University Partnership Program.

The Apprentice Artists Program

The Apprentice Artist Program is a training program for young professional singers with great potential who are career oriented, have considerable performance experience, and have typically completed their academic studies. Artists are given performing opportunities through the Opera Exposed! concert series and San Diego Opera related events, receive training to refine and expand their repertoire, rehearsal, and performance skills, and learn roles through scene work, role preparation, and masterclasses. Artists will receive an honorarium for each Opera Exposed! Concert participation and for other SDO related events. Artists must reside in San Diego during the duration of the season.

The University Partnership Program

The University Partnership Program is designed for exceptionally promising and motivated undergraduate singers enrolled in universities and colleges in the San Diego area. Participating singers receive musical and dramatic coaching on repertoire assigned in their university programs, and are given the opportunity to perform through the Opera Exposed! concert series. Participating artists must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at a SD area college or university.

Opera Exposed!

Opera Exposed!is San Diego Opera's community engagement concert series. Concerts include staged operatic arias and scenes featuring University Partnership and Apprentice artists. These exceptionally promising young artists provide engaging and exciting performances to neighborhoods and communities throughout San Diego.

Purpose for Training Programs

It is essential for the future of SDO, as well as opera as an art form, that we invest in the next generation of singers. There is no better way to accomplish this than to provide opportunities to promising young artists to fine-tune their craft, and at the same time allow the San Diego community to witness the process of their musical and dramatic development. Opera Exposed! Concerts will be presented with the highest artistic quality possible to best represent San Diego Opera and the art form to the community.
