What better way to begin our 60th Anniversary Season than with La bohème, the opera that opened the very first season of San Diego Opera in 1965. Over the past sixty years San Diego Opera has presented some of the world’s greatest singers in remarkable productions that have uplifted, mesmerized and astonished audiences. This season is one focused on tradition and innovation. We are presenting operas by three of the world’s greatest composers – Giacomo Puccini, Richard Strauss and Giuseppe Verdi. This 60th Anniversary Season is a celebration of our past and, of course, our future. Strauss’s masterpiece Salome is a shocking opera. Based on Oscar Wilde’s play of the same name, Salome tells the biblical story of Princess Salome, who becomes infatuated with John the Baptist, a prisoner in her stepfather King Herod’s court.
